School League: progress, updates, and nearing the beginning!

A lot has happened since the last post.

First... I got another job... with an after-school program. The concept of this program is that it pairs activities kids don't get a regular opportunity to do with something academic, to boost their skills "immersed" in something else.

Guess what I picked?

Yep. Kill Teams. I'm bringing my models I've painted... more on that in a moment... and running a "season" of Spec Ops.  But, given how I've done the units and rules, I have to adjust the rules somewhat. That's my final hurdle besides finishing the painting, and I've got most of the other prep work done. I have the first four missions written, with briefing data for three of them. But, since I can do those later, my focus right now is elsewhere.

Painting update: cramming it in, speed style.

- finished the Tyranids

- finished the Death Guard

- adding that to the ones I had done last spring (Exorcists Intercessors, Night Lords Heretics, and Black Templar Firstborn), That's up to 5.

- Orks need some finishing touches, but are based and mostly done. That's 6.

- GSC are ONE problem away from being complete. I had used a larger body (like one of the Acolytes) in the Neophyte team, with the smaller base to differentiate, and needed a Seismic Cannon (because the Mining Laser would be too unfair). Found an STL, printed it, painted it... and only then realized that the gap between the arms was too small for the torso.  Still considering trying to force it, but I might just use it for something later instead, and reprint it larger. But, since everything else is painted, based, and ready... that's 7.

- The Sisters are the fifth army I printed, after I found some non-creepy Repentia. But I've had a really hard time motivating to paint them. Plus, the primer is a little sticky, which has made me want to keep waiting for it to dry (which doesn't happen, rinse, repeat...). But I finally laid out some of the skin and hair, and will get over myself soon enough.

- I had originally planned on running the Veteran Guardsmen list, but since it keeps scoring really high in evaluations and tournaments, I don't want to give that kind of advantage.  I didn't run Kommandos or Wyrmcult either. So I printed some Cadian-style guardsmen and opted to use the Krieg models as Scions. that way, there are NO "bespoke" teams. Unfortunately, some of the prints went bad, with a slid plate, so there's an odd crease in a number of models. And I had already progressed in painting them enough that I don't really want to redo them. I might anyway, but right now I'm calling them finished when I do the fiddlies later today. That's 8.

- Finally, there's the Tau.  For some reason, they are the army I cannot bring myself to paint at all. Not surprising -- I bought a "rapid deployment team" of Crisis and Stealth suits back in 5th, and ended up giving it away (and later getting it back) when a friend was going through a rough time and needed something to focus on. I had issues with old paint, then found that the friend who had given me back the models had also given me his paint, including two pots of the color I needed! So now it's a matter of reprinting some parts that were mis-sized, and then getting over myself.

I'll be ready in a couple weeks, when we begin.

I also sent an email to GW's outreach for school clubs, and we can see what they will provide. I got a modest $350 budget to start my league, so I mostly bought play-mats and terrain, and 100 dice (50 black, 50 white), with some paint and brushes to spare. I have plenty of online resources, so I've printed TacOps and Spec Ops cards on cardstock, and army summaries I will likely also laminate. So, really, it's just about tokens... and finishing painting.

Our first mission will be randomly-assigned forces, and general play. They will earn points toward victory for movement toward the deployment zone, for doing shooting damage, and for fighting in Melee.  Then, next week, they will select their team for the league.

Pitch Summaries: Ten Kill Teams

 1. Black Templars Firstborn (Black)

In the future, there are superhuman soldiers (Adeptus Astartes) that go through an improvement process. These are the original type. They are passionate anti-psyker crusaders that fight for the glory of their creator, the God-Emperor of mankind.  It's a long story. They were formed from the Imperial Fists legion, and were given a specific mission by their Champion.

2. Exorcists Primaris (Red)

Some of the Astartes go through a further refinement, that is not always successful. They become larger and stronger. The Exorcists chapter, also an Imperial Fists successor, has many of these Primaris Astartes. They are a chapter devoted to fighting the evil of chaos magic, and the beings that inhabit the Warp where this chaos magic comes from.

3. Sister of the Argent Shroud (Gray)

The Adepta Sororitas -- the Sisters of Battle -- are an order of militant nuns that are part of the Ecclesiarchy -- the Church of the God-Emperor (who, ironically, never wanted humanity to think of him as a god). They were established in a time of corruption in the Church, and act as its militant force as well as its regulators.

4. Veteran Krieg infantry (Brown)

Regular humans are still a part of the military. For some planets, like Vostroya or Tallarn, serving is an honor. For others, like the former Cadia, it is a way of life.  For Krieg, it is a punishment. The veteran guardsmen of Krieg are indebted to the Astra Militarum, and serve as loyal specilaized troopers.

5. T'au Fire Team (Tan/Ochre)

As human expanded into the stars, they ran into a number of other races. Some were far older, and had galaxy-spanning empires. Some like the Tau are just coming into their own power. They are a technologically advanced people, whose battlesuits are designed to look like Macross mecha, and whose principles are based on "the greater good."

6. Snakebite Orks (Yellow)

Less serious than the other xeno races are the Orks. Their society is based on fighting and strength, and their technology is based on their belief that things work a certain way. "Red makes it go fasta!" means that their trukks actually are faster if painted red. They are comical, dangerous, and reminiscent of soccer hooligans.

7. Genestealer Bio-Cult (Orange)

Sometimes, revolts on industrial planets due to extreme working conditions are a wakeup call for the production lines. Sometimes, alien operatives have infiltrated the military, bureaucracy, and industry, and are deliberately destabilizing the planet with the idea that they will be rewarded when the "hive mind" comes to the planet and values their faithfulness. The Genestealer Cults are always responsible.

8. Hive Fleet Leviathan (Purple)

The Hive Mind steers these giant size-legged biomorphs to a planet to consume all living matter on the planet, harvest it, and move on. Including the loyal genecults that help them invade. The Tyranids are mostly mindless, steered onward to do little more than consume and retarget.

9. Death Guard Plague Marines (Green)

There were originally 20 Astartes legions. Two were lost. Of the remaining 18, a long time ago there was a revolt -- the Horus Heresy -- that involved half of them being corrupted by the warping, evil effects of Chaos. The Death Guard (originally the Dusk Raiders) were one of the original 18. They fell to the forces of rot decay and despair, the Chaos warp-entity Nurgle. Their servants include people made into walking zombies by a whole range of diseases.

10. Night Lords Heretic Astartes (Blue)

One of the original Legions, they were made up of criminals and killers, and were very effective at their jobs, They fell to Chaos in general instead of one specific entity, out of their love of destruction. They are most known for lightning-tactics, swooping in on jump-packs to create terror and in their targets and destroy them during the resulting panic.

School league -- Kill Teams

There is a coming after-school program that is looking for different options for fun activities with the kids who sign up... and one comment was that this is for the kind of kids who are not already involved in clubs or sports.

I know one of my department-mates has dibs on running a D&D campaign.
What do I bring to the table that is unique?

Warhammer.  And printing.

So... my plan is as follows:

Ten Kill Teams, each with a possible partner, and each following a different color scheme

1. Black Templars Firstborn (Black)
2. Exorcists Primaris (Red)
3. Sister of the Argent Shroud (Gray)
4. Veteran Krieg infantry (Brown)
5. T'au Fire Team (Tan/Ochre)
6. Snakebite Orks (Yellow)
7. Genestealer Bio-Cult (Orange)
8. Hive Fleet Leviathan (Purple)
9. Death Guard Plague Marines (Green)
10. Night Lords Heretic Astartes (Blue)

The  First ones -- the BT, NL, and Exorcists are done.

I have painted heads for the Genestealer Cults, in the pale skin of Leviathan.

And... that's where I got distracted by stress and home and other responsibilities.

Today, I plan on printing some things for this group, notably some Nid Warriors.  Let's see if I can jumpstart myself.
