A Return to Warhammer

I've been remiss in my hobbies.

For one thing, in the span of three years I had a child, got a Masters Degree in English Literature, and bought a house.  Since that time, I've had a second child as well.

For another, the changes in my hobby and my economic position (pros: new degree increased my take-home pay... cons: my rent included many utilities, and my mortgage is over double what the rent was; plus daycare and preschool costs are equal to that mortgage.

Mostly, though, it's been the changing of the times.  I am fortunate in that what I have the most objection to in Age of Sigmar is largely irrelevant in 40k, but the changes to both that are in the same vein have mostly taken the wind out of my sails when it comes to my enthusiasm for the game itself.  Still, I have busied myself with building and painting instead... just as I did when the codex creep and massive imbalances during the latter half of 5th edition drove all the fun out of the game.

I have built three excellent large scenic bases -- one for a Knight, one for Magnus, and one for a Dreadknight. The Knight's base is a three-tiered piece that ties together the bases of two other armies. I've also built an entire company (or clan, I suppose) of Iron Hands.  I've tried the Forge World painting style. I've learned some techniques.  And in general I've tried some funky new things.

I'm not unhappy.

For context... i would put my army collection into four categories:
- Early times, when I got started.  This was my Dark Eldar in 3rd edition, my Black Templars before they had their own codex, and Ogre Kingdoms as my first WHF army.  I also started a Thousand Sons army, but never did much with it
- Shop times, when I worked for the local GW store, where I built my Deathwing, my Beasts of Chaos, a never-played Dark Eldar Wych cult, and my Vostroyan Armored Company. I also built a Vampire Counts army based on the cursed Mousillon lands of Brettonia. At this point, my wife also bought a Slanesh daemons army (old SoC rules), a Wood Elf army, and the start of a Sisters of Battle force (that would be converted to be Chaos Noise counts-as).
- The long stretch from the end of 4th until 7th, where I built a High Elf painting project army, added Greenwing and Ravenwing to my DA, and created an Iron Hands army from scratch. This is also when I sold my Dark Eldar (only to run into them during a tournament, which was fun).
- Recently, where I have started a Knight House, a Genestealer Cults army, and then spent last summer painting up the Thousand Sons.  Plus, with Forgebane bought to supplement my Knights, I have been fleshing out a small Mechanicum force and a small Grey Knight force. I also sold my Ogres.

I have too many projects.

In a couple years, my son will want his own army -- he's attested to as much.  I will love spending time with him painting and playing. At that point, I might take some time to focus on building terrain instead, as that will scratch the same itch.
